Continental Holiday
Hotel Vila Gale, Santa Cruz, Madeira

The 4-star Hotel Vila Gale Santa Cruz is an elegant recently built hotel with an attractive wooden floored ballroom. Its public areas have been designed to admit as much natural light as possible and its bedrooms feature chic state-of-the-art fittings, such as LCD Tvs and CD & DVD players.

Located in an attractive sea front position within the delightfully characteristic fishing village of Santa Cruz, great care has been taken in the design of the hotel to integrate it harmoniously with the surrounding traditional architecture. Apart from its design, the quality of its rooms and its ballroom, the hotels most memorable features are its large seaward facing pool area and its spacious sofa strewn lobby.
Santa Cruz meanwhile is an enchantingly natural and typically Madeiran costal village, the heart of which lies only a few minutes’ stroll from the hotel door. Its main square comprises an endearing church, a small but picturesque park featuring local subtropical plants, a couple of bars and a historic council building. Quaint cobbled streets lead off this square to a variety of shops, bars, and small restaurants. Beyond lies a fish market, an attractive sea front park, a promenade, and a wonderful view across the water to the neighboring Deserted Isles.
The Island’s small single runway airport lies only a short drive away. On weekdays a complimentary pre-bookable shuttle service connects the hotel with the heart of Funchal, Madeira’s fascinating capital, several times a day.
Rooms: 258 elegantly appointed bedrooms with en suite bath, shower and a balcony. All rooms also have telephone, air conditioning/heating, satellite TV with an LCD screen, CD & DVD player, mini-bar, hair dryer & safe (extra charge).
The Ballroom: The Ericeira Ballroom is currently the only hotel based wooden floored ballroom on the island. Benefiting from a well lit parquet floor of over 400 square meters it is also elegantly decorated and well located in a quiet semi-private area of the hotel.
Other Features: Buffet restaurant with display cooking, a la carte restaurant, pool side snack bar, show bar, lobby bar, outdoor swimming pool, health & beauty spa (extra charges).
Excursion Possibilites
The Festival of the Atlantic: Historic Funchal, Madeira’s capital, occupies a vast natural atmospheric amphitheatre overlooking Madeira’s largest bay, which serves as a splendid setting for one of Europe’s major firework festivals, the Festival of the Atlantic.
Nun’s Valley: One of the most beautiful and scenically dramatic places on the island, Nun’s Valley is surrounded by towering peaks, earning its name from the fact that nuns from Madeira’s Santa Clara Convent once fled here to escape from marauding pirates. Apart from its wonderful views, the valley is also known for its liqueurs and chestnut cake.
Madeira’s Wild West: Whilst most of Madeira’s scenery is dramatic, the west of the island presents its most extreme scenery: the second tallest cliff in the world, Cabo Girao, the vertiginously deep Serra de Agua canyon, the starkly bleak windswept Paul da Serra plateau, and the ocean battered cliffs of Porto Moniz
Santana & the Verdant East: Until a tunnel broke through the central mountain barrier separating Santana from Funchal, life in this lush agricultural region was trapped in a time capsule, and it is here that one can still enjoy traditional Madeiran rural architecture. En route, the village of Camacha offers traditional Madeiran wickerwork, and the ancient laurels forests of central Madeira can be enjoyed at Ribeiro Frio.
